Scărișoara Ice Cave is the largest underground glacier in Romania and one of the largest in Europe. Near Arieșeni, it fascinates visitors with its age (over 4,000 years), its spectacular ice formations and its constant sub-1°C indoor temperature.
What is Scărișoara Ice Cave?
Scărișoara Ice Cave is a natural cavity holding roughly 75,000 m³ of ice that has been stable for more than four millennia. It is a national monument and part of Apuseni Nature Park. The tour includes the Great Hall with ice stalagmites and the famous „Church” and „Great Reserve” galleries.
How do you get there?
From Cabana de Sub Deal the cave is roughly 32 km away, about 50 minutes by car. The scenic paved road winds through the traditional Moți villages. You'll find parking, a café and local guides at the entrance.
How long does the visit take?
The guided tour lasts around 45 minutes. Including the drive and breaks, plan 4–5 hours for a relaxed visit. The cave can be toured year-round — the interior stays between 0 and 1°C.
